It is true, that a dust mat stops dirt from being carried into your premises, however, not all dust mats will give you the same results. Below are our top 5 Myths about Dust Mats that could be costing you both time and money within your business.
Myth 1 – All you need to do is Vacuum a Mat!
This is the case with your Dust Mats at home, however, a workplace is completely different mainly due to the volume of people going in and out of the premises.
Also, a good workplace Dust Mat is normally made of a High Twist Nylon which traps the dirt and pushes it to the bottom of the mat, this means even a really powerful vacuum would struggle to remove the dirt from its grip! So although the mats look clean it’s not normally the case.
Myth 2 – It’s cheaper for me to just buy a mat from a shop
This is correct, there is a huge range of Dust Mats that can be bought straight off of the shelf at very good prices. However, the purchase price is not the total cost that you need to consider, as we explained in myth 1 you also need to get the mat regularly cleaned for it to do its job well and you will also need to make sure a dedicated person is checking the mat for damage to ensure the gripper on the back is working so it does not become a trip hazard. It is so important to choose the right mat for your floor type as some are specifically for a non-carpeted area and therefore will not stay in place on carpets. Taking into account the maintenance, cleaning, and also the health and safety aspect it can work out cheaper and easier to go for the lift and lay option offered by Floorcare Service providers.
Myth 3 – A Mat at the Front Door is enough
Yes, an entrance mat is important as up to 80% of the dirt which comes into your building is bought in on the soles of shoes, but it is also just as important to protect the floors throughout the rest of your premises. So, a dust mat in your high traffic areas such as drinks vending units, fridges or food preparation areas, and even printers will help to protect your flooring.
Myth 4 – We don’t pay extra on our cleaning bill because of our Mats
This is also correct because a cleaner will vacuum the floor whether there is a mat there or not so you will not have to pay extra for this. However, just vacuuming will not clean the mats effectively and therefore the mats will not collect dirt as well as they should. This causes more dirt to be carried into the premises which are likely to take longer to clean than it would if you have a dust mat collecting most of that dirt at the point of entering the building.
Myth 5 – I can’t get many colours or designs
People underestimate the power of Dust Mats, imagine the impression which is given when a visitor or employee walks into the building and is greeted with a clean and sharp-looking mat that showcases your company logo. Or a series of mats that zones off areas within your business or can even be used to give messages to people within the premises such as directions. And if you wanted to keep it simple you could get a colour that either matches or compliments your current flooring to keep the place looking professional at all times.
