Looking Back – My First Year as a Racing Driver

During my first season as a race driver, I learned so much and not just about driving faster or starting fast when the red lights go out.

I learned the vital skills in defending and overtaking and to be much more aware of my mirrors to avoid situations from behind. Also how to properly keep my pace up behind a Safety Car and not to be over clever in positioning myself in the start box.

In the last few races of the season, my racecraft for overtaking and defending became pretty instinctive and to have beaten some experienced race drivers has given me the confidence to know that I am now ready to win races in 2022.

Girl power now on the track

It’s worth a big shout-out that my wife, Faye, raced at Brands Hatch in September by special invitation by the Porsche Club. She laid down a cracking 56-second lap in practice which is no mean feat and now with several women on the grid for 2022 the Girl Power is getting infectious, so the boys need to up our game if we’re to keep up in 2022!

Welcoming environment for all drivers

There is a very healthy, welcoming environment at PCGB not only to make women feel comfortable to race alongside men but also the driver camaraderie which is created from all the drivers whether in my class or not has been excellent.

Even if we had the odd brush with each other, we always have a beer and laugh in the garage after the race and to have forged great friendships in my first year of racing has been a warming surprise.
