Clean Hands – Tips for Good Hand Washing

Good hand hygiene has always been important but is even more important as we head towards the cold and flu season along with the threat of the 2^nd wave of Covid-19 cases heading our way. 

According to HSE England washing our hands with soap and water is the most important way to prevent the spread of infections.

Here are some tips to help maintain good hand hygiene…..

When to wash your hands:

• When you arrive at work or at home
• Before preparing or eating food
• Before touching your eyes, mouth or nose
• After using the toilet
• After blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing

What you should use:

• Soap and Water 
• Hand Sanitiser (when soap and water is not available)

How to wash your hands:

• Soap and water 
  1. Wet your hands with warm water and apply a small amount of soap.
  2. Rub your hands together until the soap forms a lather and then rub all over the back and front of the hands, in between fingers and thumbs and around fingernails.
  3. Continue to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. Yes, you’ve guessed it, the same amount of time it takes to sing happy birthday twice.
  4. Rinse your hands well to under running water to remove all of the soap
  5. Dry your hands well with a Paper Hand Towel or Cabinet Towel.

• Hand Sanitiser
  1. Use 3ml of Hand Sanitiser (if using a dispenser this should be the amount given if it is set up correctly)
  2. Rub your hands together and then rub all over the back and front of the hands, in between the fingers and thumbs and also around the fingernails.
  3. Continue rubbing in the Sanitiser until your hands are dry
  4. Do not rinse your hands or dry with a towel as this will remove the Sanitiser

Who should wash their hands:

• Everyone! To prevent the spread of infections including the common cold, flu and Covid-19 we should all be washing our hands as much as possible.
