We recycle your empty Air Freshener canisters

Have you ever wondered where the empty Air Freshener cans go?

Unless you’re sad like me, you have probably never wondered what happens to your empty air freshener cans which are taken away by your driver following your service. Well, I did and it’s actually quite interesting….

Did you know that as 60% of aerosol containers are being made from tinplated steel and 40% from aluminium, if everyone recycled their aerosols, we could save enough energy to power 273,000 TVs every year!

We aim to contribute to that, by recycling all of the air fresheners. Our drivers collect the air fresheners from various locations and bring them back to the United Hygiene Solutions depot.

While the canisters are on site waiting to be taken to the recycling plant we store the canisters in a galvanised steel container with a lock to prevent any accidents.

Recycling the canisters

Once at the recycling plant, the air fresheners go through what’s called a ‘Hopper’. A ‘Hopper’ is a cone shape machine that separates the leftover aerosol/liquid from the metal canisters. The aerosol/liquid are then stored in pressurised containers before being used as fuel for incinerators and the metal canisters are also recycled, instead of ending up at landfill.
