What to consider when choosing Hand Sanitiser

Hands - alcohol content

What is Hand Sanitiser?

A Hand Sanitiser is basically a disinfectant that is used on your hands.  The alcohol content is important, while many ingredients can be used, alcohol-based sanitisers are known to be the most effective while low or alcohol-free sanitisers offer no benefit when it comes to killing viruses.

Alcohol content

Hand Sanitisers which have an alcohol content of 60% or more are the most effective and have been recommended for use to help fight the Coronavirus pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Sanitiser is available in foam, liquid and gel.

Why should you buy a good hand sanitiser?

A good hand sanitiser with a high alcohol content can effectively kill viruses on the hands.  Hand Sanitiser is used as an alternative way of cleaning hands when there is no access to soap and water for example at entrances and exits or in communal meeting rooms where there is no access to sinks.

How to choose the correct Hand Sanitiser?

Choosing the best hand sanitiser is not always the easiest thing to do especially if you are not sure what you are looking for.  Here are some things to consider;

  • Alcohol Content – This should be between 60% and 90% to effectively kill viruses including Covid-19.  However, not all forms of alcohol are effective.  The alcohol you are looking for is either ethyl, isopropanol, or ethanol.  It is worth paying slightly more for better alcohol content!
  • Type – There are various types of hand sanitiser available, including, gel, liquid and foam. It is worth noting that foam can be more expensive, however, which type you choose is completely up to you as they all work the same.
  • Fragrance – While you can get sanitisers which are fragranced it is generally best to avoid these.  The reason for this is that fragranced sanitisers, as a rule, tend to be lower quality and the additional ingredients can cause irritation.
